12/31/2003 Entry: "sparkly sparkly"

Interesting fact of the day.

"Caligula" means "little boots". My buddy Sarah's cat is named Lil Boots. He's not completely unlike Caligula; Boots once nominated Wee consul of Rome. But after that the parallels diminish with assuredly unastonishing rapidity.

This is my favorite of Will's sonnets. At first I thought it reminded me of Jeff Foxworthy, but I think that's a bit drastic. It's just sort of hip, like some laid back britpop tune. Or a commercial for plain old cotton underwear.

CXXX.

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

I once had a cat named Caligula...that was way before Lil' Boots' time, it was an American cat, and she was calico, with no boots. But Lil'Boots has no boots, either.
