Mobiles! (Mo-beel)

Because of the little capriccio in the lesson plan in my 3rd lesson today, I thought I'd follow up on the topic of the imaginary web page web were building: mobiles.

First of all, mobile-art.org and .com are taken. But ilovemobiles.org wasn't. So nyaaa.

It was not hard to find websites about mobiles, but the first thing that I found on goog was actually for a gallery in Mobile Alabama (mo-bee-yull, that is).

And you know, I learned something. Apparently, mobiles hang from the ceiling; stabiles (stay-beel) are stand alones that can stand on the floor or a table, or even be the table. Both, however, have moving bits.

So I made a short list below:

A general art site with a lil' bit on mobiles

Erick Bissell

Howe Art Not many mob's, but gnarly kinetic art, mostly outdoor-sized.

Tim Rose-- I really dig this guy's stuff. But his web design is hideous. Vellumesque wallpaper, and the logo at the top has the jaggies for days. But click around; his is wicked.

Alexander Calder (1898-1976), is said to be one of the most important sculptors of the last century. It is also said of him that he invented the mobile. While that might well be true, something in my heart wants to question that. I'll have to ask my Art History buddies what they think about that. After all, most computer journalists will claim that the Altair 8800 was the first PC. And In music history, they say heavy metal was invented by Steppenwolf, whereas you could even argue that it really predates rock music altogether, manifesting itself in the writings of the Goliards, the Carmina Burana. More research required...
