05/16/2004 Entry: "Presentation Topics"

Some students are still looking for ideas for topics for their presentations. I won't make a list but...

Here are a few things to think about.

--Why did you decide to major in IT?

Surely, there was something that put a torch under your butt.

--Got an axe to grind?

Most of my students do. Is there anything you feel strongly about? Is there anything you get excited about when you think about your field? Oh yes there is.

--What would you like to do with your degree?

--Is your topic relevant to computer science?

If it's good enough for you then it's good enough for me.

--Look at current events.

Check out sites like wired.

--Informative is good.

But don't forget that your instructor--I or any of the other English teacher staff--are not computer experts.

--Communication is better.

That means a balanced overview with well-placed comparisons is far better than a barrage of specs.

--Persuasive is a plus.

Although it is not a requirement, I show favor to presentations which offer a persuasive opinion. Such presentations tend to show a certain conviction which makes the presentation more interesting.

--In fact, communication is king.

Remember that the goal of this course is not to correct C++ syntax. We are here to help you assess, organize and articulate information understandibly in the target language--English in this case, not Cobol or Fortran.

Did that help at all?
Maybe not... Let me know if you have further questions.
