06/25/2004 Entry: "Frauenkirche"

Sweet!

A photoshop contest for Dresden's own Frauenkirche!

The Frauenkirche was named so because it was built on the spot of a decrepitated medieval church, the Marienkirche. It is said that the impetus for it's erecting was a response to August's Hofkirche, which he built after converting to Catholicism to gain favor in his election to the King of Poland.

Architected by Behr, who also built the Dreikönigskirche, some similarities are unescapable. But most impressive is the dome-within-a-dome cross-section.

This dome withstood direct fire from Old Fritz's canon's in the Seven Years War (known as the French and Indian War in America) but succumbed to the intense heat of magnesium firebombs in '45.

Aside from AMD chips, VW's, and the Neustadt of course, the Frauenkirche is a source of pride for just about all Dresdnor.
She is the symbol of not only that cunning Saxon can-do attitude, but is also a monument to the deeply complex wisdom that German folks have learned -- to which many of my own countrymen are painfully ignorant.

Sorry, I used to be a tourguide in Dresden. I know stuff...
