Where was this website all my life? Cooking by numbers lets you click on what foodstuffs you have on hand and then finds recipes for them. Joy! Deep fried baloney ala mode!

The only downside to this site is that you can't limit searches to the cooking appliances which you actually have. When I was in college, we were only allowed microwaves but no toasters. Insurance reasons. We probably weren't allowed coffee machines either, but I had one of those. Worst of all, we weren't allowed to have girls in our rooms, so there was no one there to cook the food in the first place.

Two days ago, I had zuchini with angel hair pasta. It would have been delicious, but I unwisely put a whole tablespoon of chili powder in. So it was more like an anti-globalization demonstration turned nasty in my mouth.

Yesterday I fried some boiled taters with onions and a can of corned beef. A fist-sized can of CB costs 1,79 Euro at Plus. 500g of minced meat costs ten cents more. The advantages of corned beef is that it can sit on the shelf for years, and since it is cured you don't have to worry about overcooking. The disadvantages are that it tastes like Alpo and it makes your pee smell like corned beef. Then again, depending upon your age and gender those last two might actually also count as advantages.

there's a great vegetarian bolognese available at Kaufland (in Elbepark). It tastes even better than the real (pig/cow) thing!

boo to the girls cooking comment! more food tips: The penne arrabbiata mix from Spar, while delicious, is much spicier than penne arrabbiata in Italy, it too is like a fire in your mouth. It would probably have been much more convenient and tasty to just whip up this sauce with some tomatoes, olive oil, chili, garlic, basil and oregano anyway. drat!
