10/08/2005 Entry: "Class clown time"

Today marks the aniversary of the most disasterous forest fire in American history, the Great Fire of Peshtigo, WI.

It tends to be not remembered because it occurred on the exact same day as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. 1871 was also a momentous year for Germany, seeing as it was the year Germany became Germany. That's right: America is technically older than Germany. But if we want to pick a nit, Tennessee is technically only 5 years older--readmitted in 1866 on Michael's birthday, July 24.

A nit is a louse egg, by the way. Let us not pick those, unless we eat them too. Yum!

Today is also the birthday of Frank Herbert, author of Dune, my favourestest sci-fi saga.

Also, it's the birthday of Cleveland nudnik, jazz enthusiast, friend of R. Crumb and comic book author Harvey Pekar, whom I find incredibly inspiring.

Also, hey guys! Luke is in town for a visit! We're gonna break out the hats and hooters.

Also, I've heard a rumor that big J sent an email to lil A stating that he hates it in Portugal, the place he and Maria were supposed to stay at got rented out before they arrived and the Portugese are dicks to hippies. And he wants to come back to Dresden. That was two weeks ago, though. I'd love to see him again, but I also hope that meanwhile he works out his obstacles over there. That boy is a survivor and has a knack for overcoming against all odds.

In other news, BEES won the daily 5th place at newgrounds! This is not good, because TOAST won 3rd when it came out but I think it is not nearly as good. One big mistake I made there was timing. Friday was the deadline of some cartoon contest on that site and so there was a deluge of submissions. Several were much better, and were worked on for much longer, and were collaborations with more artists. So I screwed myself with unwise timing. On the upside, I had a shitload of visits yesterday, which was nice.

The next toon I do will probably be a collaboration with Owen. He's just finished a collection of twenty paintings, and just sold a few from the last, thus has a few thou (albeit Canadian) windfall, hence off to Ikarea for a week. Apparently, that is where the story with the wax wings comes from.
