The death day of Casey Jones

From the Writer's Almanac:

It was on this day in 1900 that the legendary train engineer Casey Jones died in a train wreck. He was known for his speed, and he often bragged that his trains always came in on time. He was driving the Cannon Ball express from Memphis, Tennessee, to Canton, Mississippi, trying to make up time because the train was overdue, when his fire man warned him that there was another train up ahead. He ordered his fireman to jump, but he stayed on the train, one hand on the break and the other on the whistle. Though the Cannon Ball crashed and Jones was killed, the passengers were saved because of his efforts to slow the train down. An engine wiper, Wallace Saunders, wrote the first ballad about him, followed by many others, including some versions in German and French.

---

Train wrecks have oft been subject matter for American folk tunes. As for the best know song about Casey--written by a colleage and friend--the copyright was sold for a bottle or two of gin.

I read a funny story about Madonna and the computer geeks who love her and how the lads were none too impressed by her clever little P2P decoy. So they decided to write songs about it--in her own words.
I thought twas funny so I decided to join in.
NOTE: uses obscene languange.

Re-code.com has been shut down. Too bad I only first heard of the site today. I mean, come on. Does Wal-Mart really believe that such a site could cause a massive upsurge of barcode looting?

So here's the dope on the waiting list students. Go ahead and sign up for the 5. DS Do., and we'll do the scheduling arrangement I mentioned today in class (in case you haven't already done so).
And have a nice Mayday. [more]

Burger Night

Tonight was the night.
The sun was kind, the corpse of winter reborn,
As a gentle Spring day. Hamburgers
are in order. Yesterday I slaved
Over hot yeast and water, flour butter and fat.
To bake the tender buns in advent
of today. Where ground beef was mixed
with spices and patted
into nice little patties whilst I
Ran outside to check the grill
A ridiculous flimsy charcoal deal.
I washed the lettuce, sliced tomatoes
and pickles, brewed iced tea and of course
froze trays of icecubes.

We dug in, I asked
if the meat was not too
raw, the others made MMMs and gave
the thumbs up. Only half the patties
eaten, I put the rest back on
the grill, can't have my friends
dying of salmonella.

We ate hamburgers, we revelled,
we danced naked in the night,
clothed by the din of passing trains.

We played silly campfire wordgames,
We drank a beer and a wine,
We played guitar and recorder and accordion
badly.

We spoke of ghosts, raccoons,
Cello solos, we grew tired and
thusly retired.
The fire whimpered,
and sat alone
glowing and smoking
as the sun returned.

What lovely weather these past two days. Eggs were painted, hidden, and then searched for. I found three, tying for first. But as the weather became suddenly warm, the old stoney bones of our house hadn't enough time to warm up on the inside. This caused a draft to come down the chimney and out my coal oven, giving the room a terrible coal smell and me a sore throat. I remedied this by burning small stack of old Die Zeit editions, which Claudia reads quite avidly.

Yep, don't forget. Signups for the presentations begin this week, so have your first and second choices for days. Don't let some monkeyboy snatch away your slot!
We'll do it right at the beginning of class, so you may want to get a seat in the front.

That means that this page is linked to from the frontpage.
I still have to get some design things ironed out, as you may guess.
Which is a lot of work and much less fun than typing stuff just for the sake of seeing my own written words.
The links page is not yet up. And actually, none of that so-called info is available just yet.

No, this would be the fourth. The next one will be the fifth. And then you know we'll all be partying like it's 1999, as the saying goes.
Which is not much of a party, if you ask me.
