05/14/2004 Entry: "Lil Wee was pregnant"

Lil Wee Diary entry

This morning as I was having breakfast with my esteemed colleague Sarah and her rabbit Lil Wee, I noticed something quite upsetting: a dead rabbit baby in the middle of the cage.

Though cold and lifeless, it was stiff soft and flexible to the touch; Wee must have given birth earlier that morning or overnight, thus answering a question on all of our minds since last Easter.
We brought Wee along to visit with Ron and Mari's Rabbit over Easter weekend. One of the rabbits, Najimo, wasted no time. I swatted him away as quickly as I could, but apparently not soon enough.

Over the course of the following weeks, her behavior had changed noticibly. She ripped the newspaper lining under the bedding of her cage completely to shreds. She took to making piles. She lied about more often in the reclining position, which is very cute. Two days ago, she reportedly started ripping out her own fur. She would also scrabble incessantly at the hard plastic floor of the cage as if to dig. And so on.

It is not clear as to whether the newborn died of exposure or if it was stillborn. Wee did fail to build a nest for him, but she certainly seemed to be making the effort to do so. There are other things to consider, like the fact that there was only one in the litter, and his relatively large size for a newborn.
