PC Pool Time again.

Okay. Here's what we're doing today.

Interview with Linus Torvald. It's pretty long -- about 30 minutes -- but Linus is fun to listen to. Of course, you'll already know what he's going to say -- even I did -- but he does a truly stellar job explaining complex stuff in a very lucid, simple way. This interview was brought to us by Fresh Air.

Take note of his accent. Does it sound more to you like British or American English? Also, take note of how he pronounces "Linux".

XML project some nice student made this project a while back. Very edutaining, but there are a few blaring errors -- pretend they aren't there.

Google Speed Test. Some of these questions -- you have to search for them in Google -- are absolute killers.

Listen to a short radio documentary about the Smothers Brothers. Narrated by Steve Martin. [more]

Happy Thanksgiving. And thank you, Squanto, and to every other human being who lost everything but still found the meaning in life to help others --regardless whether they deserved it or not (they probably didn't).

Still, come to my gig and buy a CD and lots of drinks. Happy birthdays to Terence and Chloe, also.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to report the passing of Chris Whitley last Sunday.

I guess he spent his last few month in Texas, but Dresden will certainly miss him.

More on that Sony CD copy protection hoopla:

More than half a million networks, including military and government sites, were likely infected by copy-restriction software distributed by Sony on a handful of its CDs, according to a statistical analysis of domain servers conducted by a well-respected security researcher and confirmed by independent experts Tuesday.
...
Each installation of Sony's rootkit not only hides itself and rewrites systems drivers, it also communicates back to Sony and the creators of the software, British company First4Internet and Phoenix-based SunnComm Technologies, who handled the Mac side for Sony.

At a dinner party last weekend, a friend of mine showcased his exceptionally entertaining talent for palm reading. He even put on a phoney Gypsie accent to make it even more tantalizing. [more]

Thursday's entry.

Interesting commentary for the day, Eat, Sleep, Work, Consume, Die. His notion: the convenience of modern technology does not lend itself to greater peace-of-mind.

Here are our words for today. The theme is: it's got a k in it, and it sucks:

hack (n.)

hackneyed

snarky

wonk

wonky

Oh boy, wasn't that edumacational? And speaking of the Snark, here is my favorite humourous poem: The Hunting of the Snark: an Agony in Eight Fits by Lewis Carol.

`I don't care how little your country is, you got a right to run it like you want to. When the big nations quit meddling then the world will have peace.'

`People talk peace. But men give their life's work to war. It won't stop 'til there is as much brains and scientific study put to aid peace as there is to promote war.'

`You can be killed just as dead in an unjustified war as you can in one protecting your own home.'

The weekend marked the long awaited christening of the rebuilt Frauenkirche. A marvel of architecture, a great big booby in the sky. It was windy out there so we didn't loiter. [more]

Here is a short video clip of a ballerina dancing with a nasa robot prototype. The robot has a special contact-sensensitive that helps move the arm out of the way when in contact with the dancer. It almost amusing because the robot somewhat resembles a... well, you know.
